Surprise! I refreshed the site!
I wanted to tighten things up, the old classic tomjn.com theme had gotten clunky as consecutive years took their toll.
My priorities for the site have also changed significantly. I don’t need a talks post type anymore, or an archive of projects.
Similarly with the rise of AI the value of individual frequent blog posts has crashed. I considered early on what co-writing with an AI regular posts would do, but realised quickly that aside from writing quality what would be the point when you could ask AI directly?
So, I’ve created a much simpler full site editing theme with a basic archive and a homepage built from patterns. I’ve added dark mode, and adjusted the typography.
Quattro Slab remains for headings and feature text, but I’ve introduced a new body typeface NV Halcyon, a variant of Merriweather from https://github.com/nicoverbruggen/ebook-fonts. I was tempted by Libron and may still make that change.
Overall I’m happy with the result, and it paid off to really question do I need a search page, date archives, categories, etc? As it turns out, no.
